1924; the booming 20s were well under way. St Petersburg, Russia had its named changed to Leningrad, a US presidential address was aired on the radio for the first time and the first ‘thanksgiving’ parade in New York took place. 1924 and the 20s in general were times of firsts, World War I was behind people and the world looked forward to a prosperous future. Well with the beauty of hindsight we can see that 1924 also was a ‘last’ for something. 1924, 2 generations ago was the last time that Rugby took part in the Olympics.

Many professional and semi professional rugby players know all to well how it feels to be out of action, or even worse having to give their career up, due to injuries sustained from playing rugby. One such player is Steve Thompson who sustained many bangs to the head then came one bang to many.

This caused a loss of sensation in his right side and after a subsequent neck operation was told that his career would be over. Another player who suffered a rugby related injury is Tom Philip who tore his knee ligaments, which is an incredibly painful injury.

Although rugby injuries will happen, there are certain precautions that can be done in order to help prevent injuries from occurring. Many players will do exercise in order strengthen areas prone to exercise. Strapping can be done to help provide a little support and make you become more aware of the area. And a good sports support while training will help to prevent injuries from happening.

With quality ball it will allow Fourie du Preez and Ruan Pienaar to weave their magic and get this backline going. The midfield pairing of Jean de Villiers and Jacque Fourie will be able to combat anything the All Blacks throw at them, and their solidity in crashing the ball up will allow space for Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen on the flanks. The Springboks showed in the second test against the Lions at Loftus, a willingness to try and get Bryan Habana running onto the ball and I am sure they will persist with that strategy once they have solid runners in the midfield.

This ankle support mimic’s the strapping and taping technique that a physio uses, it is incredibly lightweight, very simple to put on, and can be worn inside a boot, providing excellent support and protection
